Tips for Getting Organized During a Move
Juggling a variety of tasks while moving isn’t easy. However, with the right organizational know-how, it can be done. With the help of today’s moving tools (think: checklists, packing calculators, moving apps), it’s easier than ever to organize a well-coordinated relocation. For helpful tips and resources on getting organized before, during and a move, keep reading.
Create a moving binder
Creating and maintaining a master moving binder is a great strategy for staying organized during a move. Not only do moving binders make it easy to track moving contracts and receipts, but they also help consolidate all moving tasks into one easy-to-find place. Items that can be stored inside of a moving binder include: moving receipts, moving checklists, utility company phone numbers, list of donations, donation receipts, design/decor plans, floor plans, contractor bids, school records, medical records, financial records and more.
Color code moving boxes
Labeling your moving boxes by corresponding room? Great! When you choose DFW Packing Pros as your packing service, we will take it a step further by color coding those rooms as well. This will make it easier to spot your treasured belongings on the moving truck and once settled in your new home. We also create color-coded systems with multi-colored tape. For example, our packers would assign all boxes marked yellow tape to the kitchen area and all boxes marked to the bedroom with orange tape.
Make a list of what each box contains
As you pack your boxes, make a list of what each box contains. This will help you to keep track of your possessions (what’s been packed and what hasn’t been packed) and will help with easily locating your items after a move. A popular method utilized by DFW Packing Pros is to number all boxes and then create itemized lists for each corresponding numbered box. Our packers also place itemized lists inside or outside of the boxes.
Plan a packing strategy ahead of time
Don’t pack up your belongings at the last minute! Instead, come up with a room-by-room packing plan for moving. To begin, decide which closets and rooms to tackle first. Start with the rooms containing non-essentials or items you won’t need in the weeks leading up to the move. This could include the library, playroom, library, attic, guest bedroom/bathroom or seasonal clothing in your closet. As a rule of thumb, kitchens and bedrooms should be packed last. These rooms will likely need to be used in the final days leading up to your move.
Tie cords and place them inside baggies
If you’ve ever moved electronics, you’re probably no stranger to the twisted mess that becomes of your cords. Unless, you want to spend hours untangling numerous cords from one another, DFW Packing Pros suggest labeling and organizing all cords before they are packed. As an add on feature, our packers will wrap and secure each cord with a twist tie. Then, place the wrapped cord(s) inside of a bag and labeled according to the corresponding electronic device.
Organize donation list and receipts
Make a list of all clothing, furniture and other household belongings that you wish to donate before or after your move. Once the list is complete, decide where you will donate these items. If you’re not feeling up to the job, DFW Packing Pros can organize and collect your donations and drop them off by your donation centers such as Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Pack a moving day essentials box
Finally, don’t forget to pack your moving day essentials box or bag. Your move could end up being a less than pleasant experience without it. We recommend first making a checklist of all moving day box essentials. This way you won’t forget something at the last minute. Essentials may include medications, important documents, toiletries, baby necessities, trash bags, tool kit, an extra set of clothes, pet essentials, bottles water and ID and credit cards.
